Envision a serene sanctuary nestled amidst the bustling streets of Singapore. This is Mangala Vihara Buddhist Temple. Mangala Vihara, meaning “Shrine of Blessings,” stands as a testament to Buddhist devotion and the vision of its founder. The late Tripitakacarya Sri Saddharma Vagisvara Upsddhayaya M M Mahaweera Maha Nayaka Thero established Mangala Vihara in 1959. The land itself was a generous gift from the late Madam Chew Quee Neo. The original two-story structure, completed in March 1960, housed the main Shrine Hall, kitchen, administrative offices, a lecture hall, a library, and the monks’ quarters. The Singapore Buddhist Pali Society, founded by the late Thero, also found its home here.

The growth of Mangala Vihara reflects the flourishing Buddhist community it serves. In 1982, a three-story annex addressed the expanding needs of the temple, particularly the burgeoning Sunday Dhamma School. The school, established in 1960, adopted the curriculum of the Young Men’s Buddhist Association of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It even won the Sadhuwardhana Challenge Shield in 1961 for having the highest percentage of passes internationally. This victory became a tradition, with Mangala Vihara consistently earning the shield. A replica now proudly resides within the temple.

By 1993, the original Shrine Hall could no longer accommodate the growing congregation, especially during festivals. A new Shrine Hall was completed that same year, featuring intricate murals and a majestic marble Buddha image. Its entrance is graced by a replica of the Sanchi Gate from India. The official opening by former President of Singapore Dr. Wee Kim Wee in 1999 marked a significant milestone in Mangala Vihara’s history. That same year, the Sanchi Gate replica was inaugurated by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner.

Mangala Vihara is more than just a temple. It’s a hub of learning and spiritual growth. The Buddhist and Pali College, established in 1993, further solidified Mangala Vihara’s role in Buddhist education. The college received exemption from the Education Act as a religious school and gained affiliation with the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka in 1994. Mangala Vihara has undergone a modernization process, including upgrades to its audio-visual systems. This ensures that the temple remains equipped to serve its community in the 21st century. Today, Mangala Vihara continues to thrive as a vital center for Buddhist practice, education, and community. It stands as a beacon of peace and blessings, fulfilling the vision of its founder.
