Picture this. You are standing before the Salle du Manège Royal. Its elegant facade hints at the tumultuous history it silently witnessed. This is no ordinary building. It’s more than just a riding school. The Manège Royal played a pivotal role in the French Revolution.

The Manège Royal originally served as the royal equestrian academy. Built during the minority of Louis XV it lay near the Regent’s Palais Royal. Afterwards it became a site for private riding schools. It was never formally sold though. This elegant structure became the unexpected stage for momentous events.

In November 1789 the National Assembly relocated to Paris. They sought the King’s presence. The Manège Royal was chosen as the Assembly’s meeting place. The Assembly nationalized Church goods. They needed more space than the Manège provided. So they expanded into neighboring Capuchin and Feuillant convents. The Capuchins’ refectory housed revolutionary printing presses. The Feuillants’ library became the Assembly’s archive.

The Manège’s unique proportions were problematic. It was ten times longer than it was wide. This created poor acoustics. Debates echoed endlessly under the high vaults. Six tiers of benches accommodated the deputies. They sat according to their political beliefs. On the right were conservatives Monarchiens. On the left sat Jacobins and other radicals. This arrangement continued in the Legislative Assembly. Moderate liberals like the Feuillants replaced the conservatives. The National Convention’s Mountain occupied the left. Girondins took the right. The Plain sat below often changing sides. The public observed from the hall ends and upper loges.

The Manège Royal continued its significance. The Council of 500 convened there under the Directory. In 1799 the Jacobin Club du Manège was headquartered there. Louis XVI was tried and condemned to death there too.

Sadly the Manège Royal’s time was short-lived. It was demolished in 1804. The rue de Rivoli now stands where this historic site once was. Yet the Salle du Manège’s legacy endures. It remains a significant symbol of the French Revolution. A silent testament to the power of ideas and the people’s struggle for liberty. The story of the Manège Royal is woven into the very fabric of Paris itself. It whispers tales of revolution. It echoes with the voices of those who shaped modern France.
