For generations Manawa Stream was known as Waiwhauwhaupaku. This name a gift from the indigenous Te Kawerau a Maki people who lived in harmony with this waterway. They harvested its bounty eels and harakeke flax. Waiwhauwhaupaku’s valley was more than just a source of sustenance. It was a vital walking track connecting settlements along the Waitakere River valley to areas like Te Henga Bethells Beach.

The stream’s current name Manawa Stream is a more recent addition reflecting the arrival of European settlers. William Swanson an early immigrant who arrived in 1852 to log kauri gave the stream his surname. Sadly his legacy is also tied to the early damming of Manawa Stream for kauri logging. A practice that irrevocably altered the stream’s natural flow.

The mid-2000s brought a significant shift in how Manawa Stream was managed. Project Twin Streams initiated large-scale riparian planting. Today native flora once again thrives along Manawa Stream’s banks.
