Think about the sheer audacity of it all. A man lifting a cow. Right here in Sunshine stands John Kelly’s “Man Lifting Cow”. This bronze sculpture is more than just art. It is a statement.

The “Man Lifting Cow” sculpture was unveiled on September 6, 2016. This 6-meter-high bronze sculpture takes pride of place on Hampshire Road. It is estimated to be worth over $600,000. It is a legacy for the people of Sunshine.

John Kelly, the artist behind “Man Lifting Cow”, was born in Bristol in 1965. His family immigrated to Sunshine that same year. He donated his time to this project. Kelly wanted to give something back to his hometown.

Kelly is known for his paintings and sculptures. Many reference William Dobell’s papier-mâché cows. Dobell created them during World War II. Kelly’s cows have been exhibited worldwide. They were in Paris, Monte Carlo and The Hague.

But what does “Man Lifting Cow” mean? John Kelly’s Irish father inspired the sculpture. His father emigrated to Melbourne in 1965. He wore overalls working in rock quarries. The sculpture also references Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a figure from Greek mythology. He was condemned to eternally push a rock up a mountain.

The box-shaped cow is also significant. Kelly’s mother won a competition on a milk carton. It enabled him to go to art school. The “Man Lifting Cow” represents his father’s determination. He wanted to give his children a better future in Australia.

Brimbank City Council partnered with organizations to create the “Man Lifting Cow”. Sotheby’s Australia and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation were principal partners. The Sunshine Marketplace was also a partner.

John Kelly hopes “Man Lifting Cow” makes art more accessible to the community. He grew up in Sunshine and became an international success. This sculpture is designed to draw visitors to Sunshine.

So, next time you are in Sunshine. Take a moment to appreciate this artwork. The “Man Lifting Cow” is a symbol of community. It’s a nod to family. It is a testament to the power of art. It’s a reminder that even the most ordinary person can lift something extraordinary.
