A grand clock tower, two in fact, dominate the Malvern Town Hall. This architectural marvel stands proudly at the intersection of Glenferrie Road and High Street. Malvern Town Hall has been a landmark since its inauguration in 1886. It has witnessed the evolution of Malvern from a rural Shire to a bustling part of the City of Stonnington. Originally conceived as a Shire Hall in 1867, the need for such a building was debated for over a decade. Cost was a major concern. The initial estimate of £4,000 for a combined Shire Hall, Court House, and Library seemed exorbitant in 1880. Finally, in 1884, the council agreed on a £5,000 loan to construct the much-needed Shire Hall. Architects Wilson and Beswicke designed the initial structure, which ultimately cost £8,651. The foundation stone was laid on September 22, 1885, by Alfred Deakin, the Minister of Public Works. The opening ceremony took place on July 26, 1886, presided over by Shire President Councillor Robert G Benson. The festivities included a luncheon and a civic banquet in the Main Hall. Malvern Town Hall’s design evolved over the years. In 1890, a second tower and an extended Glenferrie Road façade were added. A clock, gifted by Councillor Alex McKinley, was installed in the main tower in 1891. Further renovations took place in 1926, led by architects Hudson and Wardrop. These renovations included a redesigned municipal wing, council chamber, mayoral rooms, and an updated ballroom with a gallery. The first council meeting in the new chamber was held on April 5, 1927. The renovated hall, featuring a new supper room and cocktail lounge, was officially opened on July 28, 1927. In 1996, the City of Stonnington undertook further major renovations. Today, the Malvern Town Hall remains a testament to architectural grandeur and historical significance. Its unique blend of Second Empire and Italianate styles, terrazzo floors, marble walls, and ornate ceilings reflect the opulence of its past. It’s not merely a historical relic but a vibrant hub for community and commercial events. From festivals and markets to music performances and fairs, Malvern Town Hall continues to serve the community much as it did when it first opened its doors.
