Long ago in the heart of Dresden’s sprawling suburbs lies Malschendorf. A place steeped in history and charm. This unassuming village boasts a story stretching back to the 11th or 12th century. It started as a small settlement of Frankish farmers. The very name Malschendorf hints at its ancient Slavic roots. It derives from a personal name like “Malaš,” “Maleš,” “Mališ,” or “Mariš.”
Malschendorf wasn’t always a quiet suburb of Dresden. For centuries it was a thriving agricultural community. Orchard after orchard produced plentiful fruit. This made it a prosperous place. This wasn’t just any farming community. It was a place that grew fruit in abundance.
Neighboring Krieschendorf played an important role in Malschendorf’s history. First mentioned in 1378 Krieschendorf and Malschendorf grew together. This was under the rule of the Schönfeld church. They became officially united politically in 1912.
Gustav Thiebel established a significant natural beauty spot. This became the Malschendorf nature reserve. It is still appreciated today. It flourished at the beginning of the 20th century. It’s a testament to Malschendorf’s enduring connection to its surroundings.
Malschendorf’s independent existence ended on March 1st 1994. It joined the larger municipality of Schönfeld-Weißig. Then Schönfeld-Weißig became part of Dresden on January 1st 1999. Krieschendorf joined Malschendorf earlier in 1950. It had previously been its own municipality.
Even though it’s now a part of Dresden Malschendorf retains its unique village character. Its quiet atmosphere and strong community spirit draw many. New housing and infrastructure improvements show a commitment to progress. This is done whilst retaining the historical charm of this place.
