Perhaps you have never heard of Jens Jensen? But he designed the beautiful Maloney Farm Preserve we are about to explore. This preserve is more than just a park. It is a testament to nature study and community collaboration.

Maloney Farm Preserve began with a generous gift. The Mahoney family deeded this land to Kenilworth in 1929. Their vision was for a nature sanctuary. It would be a place for birds and wildflowers.

Design work started in 1930. The Kenilworth Home and Garden Club played a vital role. They engaged landscape architect Jens Jensen. Club members even donated wildflowers. These came from their own gardens.

The Maloney Farm Preserve officially opened in 1933. Jensen’s design features two oval meadows. Sheridan Road divides these meadows. A continuous path connects them creating unity. Gentle curves define the pedestrian route. It offers a meandering experience for everyone. You can enjoy both sun and shade along the forested edge. Views open up to the meadows. Specimen trees add to the beauty. Native shrubs and wildflowers dot the landscape. And of course, there is the calming presence of Lake Michigan.

Notice the council rings here. These circular benches are made of limestone. Jensen placed these rings in the meadows. They serve as gathering spots. People learn about local plants and conservation here. These rings promote communal education.

Look around and observe other details. A fireplace and birdbath are also made of native limestone. These elements enhance the preserve’s natural charm.

Jens Jensen incorporated features similar to those at the Lincoln Memorial Garden in Springfield. The Kenilworth Club donated a council ring to that garden in 1939.

Stephen Christy renovated Maloney Farm Preserve in 1983. He collaborated with the Kenilworth Home and Garden Club. This ensured the preserve’s original vision was maintained.

The design invites exploration. Imagine walking through the meadows. Feel the sun on your skin. Listen to the birds singing. The scent of wildflowers fills the air. The preserve offers a peaceful escape from city life.

Maloney Farm Preserve is a unique treasure. It embodies community spirit and Jensen’s design. It is a place for learning, reflection, and connection with nature. Take a moment to appreciate this beautiful space. Consider the history and the vision that created it. This preserve continues to inspire and educate visitors.
