“Live it Up!” That was the tagline once envisioned for the Mall of Medini. The Mall of Medini is located in the heart of Nusajaya, now known as Iskandar Puteri, in Johor, Malaysia. It is conveniently just 15 minutes from Singapore.
Back in 2012, the Mall of Medini was conceived as a family-oriented lifestyle destination. It was designed to be the grand entrance to the LEGOLAND theme park. The idea was that it would offer more than just retail. It was planned to have an Outdoor Xtreme Park and an Indoor Interactive Hub. The branding revolved around “flights of imagination”. The Mall of Medini aimed to be a place where everyone could experience joy.
Picture this: families streaming through the mall. They are on their way to or from LEGOLAND. The air buzzes with excitement. Children point at the colorful signage. Many visitors would exit Legoland to settle their meals in Mall of Medini before entering the theme park again.
Mall of Medini is a two-storey mall with eateries at the ground floor.
You could find fast food outlets like Subway, KFC and McDonalds, as well as restaurants that can be found in Singapore. There are a couple of convenience stores and very few shops that sell other items. Besides food outlets, the mall has interesting photo spots and wall art.
Imagine grabbing breakfast at Old Town White Coffee before a day at LEGOLAND. You sip your Hazelnut Coffee. The aroma fills the air. For lunch, maybe a quick KFC meal to save room for water park adventures. Dinner at Secret Recipe, perhaps?
However, the Mall of Medini’s story took an unexpected turn. The mall’s fortunes were closely tied to LEGOLAND. When LEGOLAND created another access way, visitors could bypass the mall. This significantly impacted businesses at the Mall of Medini.
The sparse working population in Iskandar Puteri also hurt retailers. Many tenants closed their doors. The Mall of Medini struggled to live up to its initial promise.
But the story doesn’t end there. In recent years, the Mall of Medini has been given a new lease on life. It now hosts art festivals and cultural events. There’s hope that it may yet realize its potential, even if on a smaller scale.
