“Imagine owning a mall,” a thought once whispered among the ranks of Kopassus. That dream materialized into what we see today as Mall Graha Cijantung. This Jakarta Timur shopping center has an interesting story.
Mal Cijantung also known as Mall Graha Cijantung stands tall in Pasar Rebo. It is more than just a place to shop. It represents a unique chapter in Jakarta’s commercial history.
The story of Mal Graha Cijantung began in March 1998. This was a time of economic change in Indonesia. It was initiated by Komando Pasukan Khusus. That is the Indonesian Army’s special forces group. They own the land and the mall itself.
Mal Cijantung quickly became a landmark. It was one of the first malls in southern East Jakarta. It predates other well-known shopping centers in the area. These include Pusat Grosir Cililitan, Tamini Square, and Margo City.
Initially, Mal Cijantung targeted middle to lower-class shoppers. But in 2016, it started to change. The mall began renovations and aimed for a more upscale market. This shift reflected the changing tastes and economy of Jakarta.
The six-story Mal Graha Cijantung includes one underground floor. It has been home to several key tenants over the years. Ramayana Department Store occupied space on floors G, 1, and 2. Gramedia bookstore was on the third floor. Cinema XXI provided entertainment on the fourth floor.
Cijantung XXI originally known as Cijantung 21 featured four theaters. These theaters could seat 548 people. In December 2017, MR DIY opened a store on the first floor. This added to the mall’s variety. Transmart joined the mall in November 2018. It opened a store on the B1 level.
Today, Mal Graha Cijantung continues to serve the community. You can find a McDonald’s and a Pizza Hut here. There is also a Richeese Factory and Imperial Kitchen & Dimsum. These restaurants provide places to rest during shopping trips. Solaria offers Indonesian cuisine in Mall Graha Cijantung.
Mal Graha Cijantung is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of Jakarta Timur. It has evolved with the times. The Kopassus connection adds a layer of intrigue to this community hub. Next time you are here consider the history beneath your feet. You are standing in a place shaped by military ambition and commercial vision.
