MALBA Puertos embodies three key interests. It helps us understand the present. First, art questions our time’s contradictions. Second, nature’s fragility is key to our world relation. Third, attention should be given to communities. Their stories are often ignored by mainstream culture.
Estudio Herreros designed this space. They worked with Bulla on landscaping. FloraEstudio handled industrial equipment. Torrado Arquitectos served as the local team. They avoided a typical urban building. The team wanted a place for random encounters. It is not only a place for visits.
MALBA Puertos is a transparent building. It is porous and democratic. Its limits blur. Exhibition mixes with learning. Archive work blends with indigenous cultures. Inside and outside merge. It even lacks a main door.
MALBA Puertos layers three exhibition models. These models go beyond a usual museum. An outdoor sculpture circuit links the city to art. It also highlights the natural reserve’s value. A geometric forest frames an alder tree plantation. Clearings serve as open-air galleries. Three pavilions and plazas form the heart.
A large roof covers the three pavilions. One pavilion holds an exhibition hall and a store. Another has a visitable art storage and a café. The last is a glass volume. It houses a permanent sculpture by Gabriel Chaile. The pavilions are simple prisms. Steel supports and concrete panels form the structure. This simplicity avoids museum solemnity.
The roof has a steel beam grid. It is pierced by three large trees. This allows light into three plazas. One plaza opens to the city. Another faces the lake. The third overlooks nature. These plazas host events like markets and outdoor films.
The architecture creates space. It allows for diverse activities. These extend to the “Salas del Bosque.” This area has three open-air exhibition spaces. They are surrounded by alder trees.
Visiting a museum becomes inhabiting an ambiguous space. This space is either open or closed. Children are a key focus. The accessible art deposit shows the value of art. It is a living record of their history. A space is equipped for educational activities. These include collective actions and workshops. The spaces under the roof also host many activities.
MALBA Puertos is a statement. It shows how institutions can use architecture. It also expands art to all social groups. This breaks down elitism.
