“Why is this colonial bungalow so important?” You might wonder as you stand before No. 2 Jalan Stonor, the Heritage Centre of Badan Warisan Malaysia. This is not just a building. It is a portal into Malaysia’s architectural soul.

Badan Warisan Malaysia, or the Heritage of Malaysia Trust, is a non-governmental organization. It dedicates itself to conserving Malaysia’s built heritage. Founded in 1983, it arose from a concern. Kuala Lumpur’s historical buildings were disappearing due to rapid development.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr.) Mubin Sheppard, a prominent historian, was key to its formation. He and others saw the urgent need to protect Malaysia’s heritage. They feared it would be forgotten.

Since its beginning, Badan Warisan Malaysia has been involved in numerous conservation projects. These projects span across Malaysia. They include Suffolk House in Penang and Stadium Merdeka. Gedung Raja Abdullah and Masjid DiRaja Sultan Suleiman in Klang were also included. Not to mention, Bangunan Sulaiman and Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman in Kuala Lumpur. No. 8 Heeren Street in Melaka’s UNESCO World Heritage Site is another example. Rumah Kutai in Kuala Kangsar, Istana Tunku Long in Kuala Terengganu, and Istana Jahar in Kota Bahru complete the list.

Badan Warisan Malaysia operates from this very building. The colonial bungalow was restored in 1995. It now serves as a Heritage Centre. Here, you’ll find exhibition, seminar, and meeting facilities. It is more than just an office. It’s a hub for heritage enthusiasts.

The Heritage of Malaysia Trust plays a crucial role in raising awareness. It advocates for a conservation-friendly environment. It works with communities, institutions, and the government. All to promote the preservation of historic buildings.

Step inside the Chen Voon Fee Resource Centre. It’s located within this Heritage Centre. This specialized library houses a wealth of information. Documents, books, and photographs cover architecture, heritage sites, and history. It also covers culture and heritage legislation in Malaysia.

Badan Warisan Malaysia has undertaken many building conservation projects since 1985. Many have received awards locally and internationally. The organization is also involved in cultural heritage tourism. They develop heritage walks and promote sustainable management of heritage sites.

The current council members of Badan Warisan Malaysia contribute their time and expertise voluntarily. The President is Esme Lim Wei-Ling. The Vice President is Dato’ Zahim Albakri. Tengku Nasariah Tengku Syed Ibrahim is the Honorary Secretary. Robert Morris serves as the Honorary Treasurer.

By championing heritage buildings, Badan Warisan Malaysia ensures their stories remain. These stories are entwined with the nation’s identity. The organization also emphasizes education and public awareness. Through talks, exhibitions and workshops, it teaches about conservation.

Before you leave, consider the impact of Badan Warisan Malaysia. It is a guardian of Malaysia’s past. It ensures that future generations can appreciate the nation’s rich architectural heritage.
