Have you ever imagined a temple that holds the tales of ancient kings and valiant rebels? The Malagammana Raja Maha Viharaya, nestled amidst Kandy’s green hills, is a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich history. Its weathered walls whisper stories of kings and rebels who fought for their beliefs. Dedicated to the noble King Bhuvanekabahu V, this temple embodies the spirit of resilience. The temple’s history is a fascinating journey through time – it’s said that Bhuvanekabahu V, a wise and powerful king, built the viharaya during the Gampola period. However, the viharaya went through a turbulent chapter. During the 1817-18 Kandyan rebellion, British forces destroyed the temple. Though the viharaya was rebuilt, the scars of those times remain etched on its walls. Today, you can still see the traces of the past. Look closely, and you will notice remnants of intricate murals that were once vibrant depictions of Buddhist tales, now faded but still beautiful. These murals adorned the temple’s inner walls, carrying narratives from the Suvisi Vivaranaya and the Mara Parajaya, two popular themes that capture the essence of Buddha’s teachings. Among these murals, there are some Jataka stories, each a fable with a moral lesson. The ceiling, adorned with floral designs, adds a touch of elegance to the temple’s interior. The main image house is a sight to behold. Its Mandapaya, supported by sturdy stone pillars and wooden brackets, grants a glimpse into the architectural genius of the era. As we move through the temple, notice the doorway – a solid piece of stone, guarding a hidden treasure. Inside the Garbhagrha, we find ourselves facing a magnificent seated Buddha statue, serene and majestic beneath a Makara Torana. The Makara Torana, a mythical creature, resembles a celestial dragon, symbolizing power and auspiciousness. This statue showcases Kandyan artistry, with its elegance and intricacy. The temple has more treasures hidden within. Behind the Pilima-ge, in a small room, lies a recumbent Buddha figure, a powerful depiction of the Buddha’s passing. On the wall, you will find a record of the temple’s destruction at the hands of the British. Look up, and you’ll see the roof. Notice how the sunlight streams through the intricate designs, casting an ethereal glow on everything below. The Malagammana Raja Maha Viharaya is not just a place of worship; it’s a living museum, showcasing the spirit of resilience and the enduring faith of the people of Sri Lanka.
