A golden dome gleams in the Singapore sun. This is the Malabar Muslim Jama’atah Mosque. Its plaque tells a story. A story of faith community and resilience.

The Malabar Muslim Jama’atah Mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the Malabar community’s journey in Singapore. Originally from Kerala India they arrived in the early 19th century. Primarily traders they established the Malabar Muslim Jama’ath in 1927. Their first office a modest shophouse on Changi Road. It later moved to Bussorah Street then finally to Victoria Street.

Before the mosque stood a burial ground. Used until World War II it held the remains of the community’s ancestors. The previous Tittacheri Muslim Cemetery and Mosque fell into disrepair. The Jama’ath took over around 1929. They launched a fundraising campaign. Donations poured in from Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The foundation stone was laid on April 10 1956. The Mufti of Johor represented Sultan Ibrahim bin Abu Bakar. Construction was slow due to funding challenges. Yet the Jama’ath persevered. They worked tirelessly to complete their vision. The mosque opened on January 24 1963. Yang di-Pertuan Negara Yusof bin Ishak declared it open.

Designed by A H Siddique an immigrant from India the mosque showcases traditional Islamic architecture. Its golden onion dome a striking feature. The octagonal minaret capped with a smaller dome stands tall. Inside the ground floor houses the Koran study area the imam’s room and a visitors’ lounge. The main prayer hall on the first floor faces Mecca. It’s surrounded by verandas.

The mosque’s exterior originally painted was retiled in 1995. Distinctive blue and white lapis lazuli tiles now adorn its walls. The renovation reflected Singapore’s rapid development. The mosque’s unique design and color attracts tourists and locals alike.

In 2018 plans emerged for a three-story annex. This expansion would include a female prayer space a heritage gallery and classrooms. It may involve exhuming some unidentified graves. This project a testament to the community’s continued growth and evolution is a further chapter in the story of the Malabar Muslim Jama’atah Mosque. This plaque a small but significant marker of that story stands as a proud symbol of faith and community in the heart of Singapore.
