A breathtaking panorama unfolds before you. This is Makapu’u Lookout. From this vantage point you gaze upon the stunning eastern tip of Oahu.
Makapu’u Lookout offers a panoramic view of the island’s dramatic coastline. Its historical significance is intertwined with the nearby Makapu’u Point Lighthouse. This impressive structure stands as a testament to maritime history. Its construction was spurred by the tragic grounding of the steamer Manchuria in 1906. The lighthouse boasts a remarkable French Fresnel lens. This 12-foot-tall lens is the largest of its kind in use in the United States. A vandal’s bullet damaged it. However the lens remains in service. Its unique design is no longer reproducible.
The Makapu’u area is rich in legends. The name itself translates to “bulging eye” in Hawaiian. It derives from a tale of a goddess with eight bright eyes residing in a nearby cave. The lookout is also a popular spot for whale watching. Between November and April you may spot humpback whales in the waters below. Their majestic presence adds to the splendor of this iconic location.
Makapu’u Point State Wayside Park lies nearby. The park encompasses Makapu’u Head and the lighthouse. A paved trail winds its way to the lighthouse. However the lighthouse remains closed to the public. From the summit breathtaking views of Molokai and Lanai islands are visible. On exceptionally clear days even Maui can be seen across the Kaiwi Channel.
Close by is Manana Island also known as Rabbit Island. This 63-acre offshore tuff cone is a protected bird sanctuary. Once inhabited by rabbits it now provides a safe haven for various bird species. Its unique shape resembling a rabbit’s head gives it its whimsical name.
The rocky shoreline below offers stunning views. It also offers some unique features. Blowholes along the coast sometimes erupt sending water high into the air. Makapu’u Beach Park is a popular spot for body surfing. However it is important to be aware of the strong waves and undertow. The adjacent Kaupo Beach is better suited for less experienced swimmers. Nearby the Makai Pier supports marine research.
