Gazing at the Majolika Manufaktur, one might hear whispers of Grand Duke Friedrich I. He envisioned a place where art and industry intertwined. The Majolika Manufaktur in Karlsruhe became that vision. It started in 1901 in a building designed by Friedrich Ratzel near the Kunstakademie. The initial production focused on artistic pieces designed by Thoma, Süs, and Würtenberger. However, sales struggled. A Förderverein and August Fricke’s leadership brought a needed focus on practical ceramics. This shift increased sales and led to a new factory in the Hardtwald in 1908. The architects Pfeifer & Großmann designed the efficient new space. The original building transformed into a showroom. The Majolika Manufaktur also expanded into architectural ceramics. This became a key part of their business under Hans Großmann’s design office. By 1913, they even crafted memorials and garden art. The once “non-commercial” enterprise employed about 130 people. It officially registered under the leadership of August Fricke and two partners. Villeroy & Boch later leased the Majolika Manufaktur, retaining Fricke. World War I brought changes. Demand for architectural ceramics dropped. Simpler wares, like everyday dishes, became essential. The Majolika Manufaktur changed hands several times. It became state-owned in 1919. Then, a GmbH comprised of industrial groups and individuals took over. In 1921, it expanded by acquiring Dr. Reimar Baer’s workshops and Keramische Werkkunst Ettlingen. Despite becoming a public company in 1922, financial struggles continued. The state likely bought it outright in 1924 to prevent bankruptcy. The Majolika Manufaktur even survived heavy bomb damage in 1944. After World War II, it passed to the state of Baden-Württemberg. It remained there until the Katz Werke AG briefly took over from 1978 to 1983. The Landesbank Baden-Württemberg owned it from 1999 to 2011 before the city acquired it, establishing the Majolika Foundation. Even after an investor stepped in, the Majolika Manufaktur eventually closed in 2024.
