Have you ever wondered about the first Maldivian government school? This grand building right before your eyes, Majeediyya School, holds the answer. Established in 1927, it initially welcomed only boys. It wasn’t until 2010 that girls were allowed to join the student body, making it a co-educational institution. The school’s name, Majeediyya, means ‘royal’ or ‘grand’ in Dhivehi, reflecting its importance in the Maldivian educational landscape. The school’s motto, “Nihil Labore Difficile,” which translates to “Nothing is impossible with hard work,” embodies the spirit and perseverance of both its students and teachers. Interestingly, the school’s original name was Madhrasathul Salaahiyyaa. It later changed to Madhrasathul Saniyyathul Hukoomathul Mahaldheebiyya in 1928. In 1946, it finally became known as Majeediyya School. With a rich history spanning nearly a century, Majeediyya School is a testament to the commitment of the Maldivian people to education. It has nurtured countless individuals who have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields. Some notable alumni include eight presidents of the Maldives and prominent figures in the military, diplomacy, and sports. While you stand here, imagine the countless footsteps that have graced these hallways, the vibrant classrooms filled with the pursuit of knowledge, and the echoes of laughter and progress reverberating through the years. The legacy of Majeediyya School continues to flourish, shaping the future of the Maldives one student at a time.
