Hidden within Paris, a gem awaits discovery: Maison Saint-Jean. This isn’t just another Parisian building. It’s a “maison de maître,” a master’s house, whispering tales of the past. Designed by Georges Auguste Ranchon in the early 19th century, Maison Saint-Jean originally belonged to the Chénier family, known as the “Belle Levantine” property. Imagine Louis-Sauveur Chénier, younger son of Louis Chénier and brother of the famed poet André Chénier, walking these very grounds. In 1820, the house welcomed a new resident: Jean-Charles Persil, minister to King Louis-Philippe. He spent his final days here, passing away within its walls in 1870. Today, Maison Saint-Jean stands as a testament to its rich history, now under the stewardship of the Marianist Foundation. The house has witnessed significant moments, including Jakob Gapp’s final vows to the Society of Mary in its very chapel. Later, the young Faustino Pérez-Manglano would camp on the grounds, a Parisian adventure orchestrated by his college, Santa Maria del Pilar de Valence. Maison Saint-Jean stands as a silent observer, its walls echoing with stories of poets, ministers, and religious figures. It’s a place where history comes alive, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
