Nestled between two architectural marvels, the Mairie du 8e Arrondissement stands as a testament to Parisian history. The Mairie du 8e Arrondissement isn’t just one building. It occupies two structures built sixty years apart, each with its own unique story to tell. First, there’s the Hôtel Cail, a stunning example of eclectic architecture. Built between 1865 and 1867 for industrialist Jean-François Cail, it blends Classicism and Renaissance styles on Boulevard Malesherbes. Imagine strolling down the boulevard in the late 19th century, the ornate facade of the Hôtel Cail catching the sunlight. In 1922, Cail’s daughter sold the building to the City of Paris. Four years later, it was inaugurated as the new Mairie du 8e Arrondissement on June 2, 1926. The second building, located on Rue de Lisbonne, was constructed between 1926 and 1928. Architect Jacques Hermant designed it to complement the existing Hôtel Cail, seamlessly connecting the two structures around a courtyard garden. The architectural styles are distinct yet harmonious. The Hôtel Cail, with its blend of Classicism and Renaissance elements, speaks to the opulence of the Second Empire. The Rue de Lisbonne building, while newer, respects the aesthetic of its older counterpart. This union of old and new embodies the spirit of the 8th arrondissement, a district that cherishes its history while embracing modernity. The Mairie du 8e Arrondissement is more than just administrative offices. It’s a living piece of Parisian history, a symbol of the city’s enduring elegance and adaptability.
