“Did you know this elegant building behind me houses the heart of Lyon’s 6th arrondissement?” That is the Mairie du 6e arrondissement. It is more than just a town hall. It is a symbol of local governance.

The 6th arrondissement was created in 1867. It separated from the 3rd arrondissement. People widely regard it as Lyon’s most bourgeois neighborhood.

Let’s step back to the 18th century. The city decided to expand eastward across the Rhône river. This led to the creation of wide avenues and large buildings. Jean-Antoine Morand played a key role. He acquired land in 1765 to extend the Presqu’île eastward. Morand’s innovative grid street system reinvented Lyon.

However, the French Revolution brought turmoil. Jean-Antoine Morand was beheaded in 1794. Many buildings were destroyed.

The 6th arrondissement experienced a revival in the 1830s. The bourgeoisie and workers migrated across the Rhône. Roads were paved. The Eglise Saint-Pothin opened in 1843.

Devastating floods in 1856 marked another turning point. Farms and weaker houses disappeared. Modern Art and Art Déco styles replaced them.

The Parc de la Tête d’Or opened in 1857. The Brotteaux train station followed in 1859. These reflected the district’s artistic evolution.

In 1894, the Universal and International Exhibition took place in the Parc de la Tête d’Or. Also, Lyon launched license plates in 1900. This was for automobiles crossing the park.

Today, the 6th arrondissement is a vibrant mix of history and modernity. It has around 50,000 residents. The Mairie du 6e arrondissement stands as a focal point. It is located at 58 rue de Sèze.

You can visit the Mairie du 6e arrondissement from Monday to Friday. The opening hours are 8:45 AM to 4:45 PM. On Saturdays, it is open from 9:30 AM to 12 PM.

The 6th arrondissement boasts some of Lyon’s most expensive real estate. Mansions near the Parc de la Tête d’Or are particularly prestigious.

Notable places include the Place Maréchal Lyautey. It provides a great playground for families. The Place Puvis de Chavannes is located near the Redemption Church.

The TCL subway network serves the 6th arrondissement. Stations like Foch and Masséna provide easy access.

The 6th arrondissement offers a blend of residential charm and cultural attractions. It features five Michelin-starred restaurants.

The Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art is nearby. It offers a variety of temporary exhibitions.

As you explore, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From revolutionary turmoil to modern elegance, the Mairie du 6e arrondissement embodies the spirit of this unique district.
