Consider the Mainzer Autobahntunnel not just as a passage. Imagine it as a crucial artery within Mainz’s transportation network. This marvel of engineering lies in the Hechtsheim district. It forms a vital part of the A60, also known as the Mainzer Ring.
Before the Mainzer Autobahntunnel existed the A60 was just two lanes each way. There was no emergency lane. This old road from the 50s became a highway in the 70s. But traffic grew so much that it needed an upgrade. Plus, people living nearby needed less noise. Walls wouldn’t cut it.
So, they decided to build the Mainzer Autobahntunnel. Construction began in August 2006. The tunnel has two tubes. Each tube has three lanes. The first part opened in August 2008. All lanes were open by August 10, 2012. The project cost 58 million euros. Today, that’s about 75.4 million euros with inflation.
Think about the scale of this project. The tunnel walls use 22,500 meters of large bored piles. The concrete is 1.2 meters thick. The roof is 1.5 meters thick. It covers 6,540 square meters. They used 50,000 cubic meters of concrete and 750 tons of steel. The asphalt covers 85,000 square meters. Noise barriers span 5,200 square meters.
The Mainzer Autobahntunnel itself is 357 meters long. The whole project included more than just the tunnel though. There were deeper sections leading up to the tunnel. To the west, the ground was lowered by up to 11.5 meters over 700 meters. At the tunnel itself, it’s 11.5 to 12.7 meters deep over 450 meters. To the east, the ground slopes back up over 1,050 meters.
During construction in 2006 traffic shifted to one side. Then workers dug down more than 12 meters. They built the north tunnel using a cut-and-cover method. After that tunnel was done, they shifted traffic again to build the south tunnel.
Fun fact: The Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse now goes under the highway. It’s 1.10 meters higher than before. Also, the Alte Mainzer Strasse bridge is 2.10 meters higher. The Hechtsheim-Ost exit is one of few inside a tunnel.
Since its opening, the Mainzer Autobahntunnel has faced some challenges. The tunnel has very sensitive temperature sensors. These cables in the roof can detect a sudden rise in heat. This triggers an alarm. The tunnel closes. Emergency services rush in. Sometimes, hot exhaust from trucks sets off the alarm. The Autobahn GmbH plans to add more sensors like carbon monoxide detectors to reduce false alarms.
