Picture this: a solitary tower rising from the Bosphorus. That’s the Maiden’s Tower. Its silhouette against the Istanbul skyline is both mysterious and majestic. For centuries it has stood sentinel at the strait’s entrance a silent witness to countless ships.

The Maiden’s Tower or Kiz Kulesi in Turkish. It’s more than just a pretty picture. It’s a structure steeped in history and legend. Originally a wooden tower built by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus in 1110 it served as a vital part of the city’s defenses. The tower suffered damage from the earthquake of 1509 and a fire in 1721. It was rebuilt and restored numerous times. The most recent restoration was completed in 2023. It incorporated modern technology while preserving its historical features.

The most famous story about the Maiden’s Tower is a tragic one. A Byzantine emperor was warned by an oracle that his beloved daughter would be killed by a snake on her eighteenth birthday. To prevent this he confined his daughter to the tower. He believed she would be safe from snakes there. Tragically on her birthday a venomous snake hidden in a basket of fruit bit the princess. She died just as the prophecy foretold. Hence the name Maiden’s Tower.

Another legend ties the tower to the Greek myth of Hero and Leander. Hero a priestess lived in a tower near the Dardanelles. Leander swam across the strait each night to see her. One stormy night he drowned. Hero in her grief threw herself from the tower. Because of the similarity between the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus the legend was attached to the Maiden’s Tower.

Today the Maiden’s Tower is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can reach it by private boat. The interior houses a cafe and a restaurant offering breathtaking views of Istanbul.
