A monument of steel, sliced through with a jagged scar. This is the Mahnmal Israelitisches Kranken- und Schwesternheim. It stands here, a silent sentinel to a painful past. Right where we’re standing once resided a beacon of hope, the Israelitisches Kranken- und Schwesternheim, a hospital founded in 1910. This wasn’t just a place of healing, but a symbol of Jewish identity in Munich. What’s remarkable is that until 1933, the hospital served people of all faiths. It was a place of true compassion, attracting renowned doctors like Prinz Ludwig Ferdinand who performed surgeries here. But then, a shadow fell over Germany.

With the rise of the Nazis, Jewish individuals were barred from public hospitals. The Israelitisches Kranken- und Schwesternheim became a refuge, a lifeline for a community facing persecution. The hospital faced immense pressure with limited resources. The horrors reached their peak in 1942. The Nazis, driven by their hateful ideology, ordered the hospital’s closure. Imagine the terror. Roughly 50 patients, many of them gravely ill, were herded into a furniture van. Their destination – Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Only a handful survived, including the head doctor, Julius Spanier, his wife, and two nurses. The building itself, once a sanctuary, was seized by the Nazis and later, tragically destroyed in bombing raids. Today, the Mahnmal Israelitisches Kranken- und Schwesternheim serves as a reminder. A reminder of the lives lost, the suffering endured and the importance of tolerance and compassion. We must never forget the horrors inflicted within those walls. And we must strive to create a world where such atrocities are never repeated.
