Within Mahavira Hall, serenity reigns. This isn’t just any hall. It’s the heart of the Siong Lim Temple, now known as Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery. Mahavira Hall commenced its journey in 1904, reaching completion in 1907. Over a century later, this hall stands as a testament to time, having witnessed both meticulous restorations and thoughtful renovations. Its position along the central axis, from south to north, underscores its significance as the most important and ornate hall within the monastery. Inside Mahavira Hall, the Buddhas of the three worlds preside. They sit cross-legged on the altar, embodying peace and wisdom. At the center is Shakyamuni Buddha, flanked by two of his chief disciples, Venerable Mahakasyapa and Venerable Ananda. Shakyamuni, born Siddhartha to royalty, embarked on a spiritual quest at 29. Six years later, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, becoming the Buddha. He then shared his teachings for 45 years before passing away at 80. To his left resides Bhaisajyaguru Tathagata, the Medicine Buddha, a beacon of healing and protection. On Shakyamuni’s right is Amitabha Buddha, master of Sukhavati, the Western Paradise. Above these enlightened figures, three intricately carved caisson ceilings, known as ZaoJing, serve as symbolic canopies. Twenty-six pillars, some reaching ten meters in height, support the hall. The architecture showcases a captivating blend of Fuzhou and Quanzhou styles, reflecting the artistry of early immigrants to Singapore. Mahavira Hall whispers tales of their skill and cultural heritage.
