Overlooking the serene waters of Kandy Lake stands Mahamaya Girls College. Do you know the story of its name? Mahamaya Girls College is named after Queen Mahamaya, the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, who would later become the Buddha. This connection to Buddhist history is woven into the very fabric of the school. Mahamaya Girls College was founded on January 14, 1932. It was initially called Buddhist Girls’ College. The school was established by the Sadhachara Kulangana Samithiya, led by Lady Sarah Soysa and Chitravo Ratwatte. Imagine those early days, a small group of just ten students and three teachers gathered in the West Cliffe Bungalow. This bungalow, purchased from Anagarika Dharmapala along with surrounding land, served as the first classroom. Prominent figures like Anagarika Dharmapala, D.B. Jayatilaka, P. de S. Kularatne, G.P. Malalasekera, and C.W.W. Kannangara all played a role in the college’s founding. The college quickly grew. In 1938, it was renamed Mahamaya Girls’ College. A significant turning point came in December 1960 when Mahamaya transitioned to state administration. This allowed for greater resources and expansion. The college continued to flourish, achieving National School status in 1982. Over the years, Mahamaya Girls College has developed impressive facilities. The auditorium was completed in 1990, followed by a swimming pool in 2000. Today, the school boasts over 4,000 students, guided by a dedicated staff of nearly 200 teachers. Mahamaya Girls College remains deeply rooted in Buddhist tradition. Theravada Buddhism is integral to the school’s educational system, reflecting the broader Sri Lankan context. The school’s motto, “Vijja Uppaththang Setta” meaning “Knowledge is Supreme,” underscores its commitment to academic excellence. Students are divided into four houses: Sangamiththa, Maya, Yasodhara, and Prajapathi, each named after significant figures in Buddhist history. This system fosters healthy competition in sporting events and house debates. Mahamaya Girls College stands as a testament to the vision of its founders. It continues to empower young women through education, carrying forward the legacy of Queen Mahamaya and the pursuit of knowledge.
