Across the ravaged landscape of 1944 Budapest, a beacon of resistance flickered at 16 Ilona Street, District I. Here, in the heart of the city, the Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága, the Hungarian Front Committee, held clandestine meetings. They met in a building that no longer stands, a silent witness to their bravery. They plotted against the Nazi occupation, a dangerous game of whispers and shadows. The Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága, established in May 1944, united diverse groups. The communists, social democrats, the Independent Smallholders’ Party, legitimists, and later, the National Peasant Party, all set aside their differences. They had a shared goal: to liberate Hungary from Nazi control. The committee’s headquarters at 16 Ilona Street buzzed with tense energy. Key figures like Szakasits Árpád, Rajk László, and Kállai Gyula from the communist party, along with representatives from other parties, huddled in dimly lit rooms. They debated strategies, drafted action plans, and coordinated with resistance groups across the city. They even held secret talks with Admiral Horthy, hoping to persuade him to break with the Nazis. One can almost feel the weight of their decisions, the fear of discovery clinging to the air. The Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága’s work wasn’t limited to political maneuvering. They actively engaged in propaganda, distributing leaflets and broadcasting messages of hope and defiance. They also made several attempts to organize armed resistance, gathering weapons and training recruits. Their efforts were fraught with danger. The Gestapo and their Hungarian collaborators were constantly on the lookout for any sign of rebellion. The Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága at 16 Ilona Street became a symbol of hope. A symbol of a nation’s yearning for freedom. But their time was running out. In October 1944, the committee requested Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Endre to lead the Magyar Nemzeti Felkelés Felszabadító Bizottsága, the Hungarian National Uprising Liberation Committee. This was intended to be the armed wing of the resistance. But the plan was discovered by the Arrow Cross Party. Bajcsy-Zsilinszky and his co-conspirators were arrested and executed. The Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága’s work ended in December 1944, when its role was taken over by the Magyar Nemzeti Függetlenségi Front. Although short-lived, the Magyar Front Intézőbizottsága’s activities at 16 Ilona Street played a crucial role in the fight for Hungary’s liberation. They kept the flame of resistance alive during a dark period. They helped pave the way for the eventual liberation of Budapest.
