“Civilszervezet” is a long word. The Magyar Autóklub is one of Hungary’s largest automotive civic organizations. It has a rich history dating back to its founding in Budapest on November 30 1900.
Initially, 45 members gathered at the Royal Hotel. They formed the Magyar Automobil Klub. Count Szapáry Pál became its first president. Prominent figures like Bánki Donát, Csonka János and Törley József joined the committee. These men shaped the early direction of the club.
Count Andrássy Sándor, a parliamentary representative and landowner, took over as president in 1906. His leadership further solidified the club’s influence. In 1911 the club gained royal recognition. It became the Királyi Magyar Automobil Club. Over time, it dropped the “Királyi” or “Royal” from its name.
A significant change occurred in 1960. On the recommendation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the organization adopted its current name: Magyar Autóklub. The Magyar Autóklub moved its headquarters in 2011. The new location was in Újpest at Berda József utca. The inauguration took place on November 11 2011. The opening was precisely at 11:11 am.
