“Rooted in Grace”. These words, carved above the entrance of the Magnolia Church, invite you on a journey back in time. This humble church, standing tall on Commerce Street, has witnessed the evolution of Magnolia, a small town that has blossomed into a vibrant community. Its story began in the year 1838, when a group of devoted individuals gathered in their homes to share their faith.
The early years were marked by simple beginnings, with services held in a one-room building. This structure, without the luxury of backs on its benches, served as a sanctuary for the growing congregation. Imagine the dedication of those early members, willing to sit for two-hour services in such humble surroundings. In 1904, the one-room church found a new home on Commerce Street, the present location of the Magnolia Church’s parking lot. Its transformation was not complete, however.
In 1940, the building made another significant move, across the street to its current location. The church building was even turned around, with a vestibule added to the front and an addition to the rear, housing a parlor and an “Upper Room”. The old church, a symbol of the community’s enduring faith, endures, providing a glimpse into the rich history of this congregation. The church has continued to grow, embracing the challenges and blessings of each passing decade.
