Great, let’s explore Maglehøj together. This ancient burial mound whispers tales from a time long past. Magle in place names means large. There are about 40 places in Denmark with the name Maglehøj. Most of these are burial mounds.

Maglehøj here in Frederiksværk stands as a testament to the past. This impressive grave mound dates back to ancient times. It measures 35 meters in diameter and rises 5.5 meters high. The mound rests upon a massive hill. This hill consists of Ice Age moraine deposits. Post-Ice Age wind erosion shaped the hill. Gravel extraction also played a minor role.

The summit of Maglehøj sits 70 meters above sea level. The burial mound has a distinct dome shape. A narrow footpath leads to the top. Two deeper tracks also ascend to the peak. From the summit a panoramic view unfolds. You can see Frederiksværk, Arrenæs, and Arresø. Hillerød is also visible. On a clear day the towers of Roskilde Cathedral appear to the south.

In the 1980s, crews cleared trees and bushes from the grave mounds. Vegetation has since returned. In the winter and spring of 2009, Halsnæs Municipality and the Nature Agency. North Zealand worked to make the mounds visible again. They implemented annual vegetation trimming. This maintains a low vegetation cover. It prevents soil erosion from rain and wind.

At the top stands a postament. This is an approximately 1.5-meter-high brick block. It features a bronze plaque on the side.

Just a few meters southwest of Maglehøj lies Lille Maglehøj. It is smaller. It measures 20 meters in diameter and 3.5 meters in height. The municipality’s technical department also maintains it.

Maglehøj is more than just a mound. It is a window into Denmark’s ancient history. It is a place where you can connect with the past. It is a place to appreciate the beauty of the landscape. As you stand here take a moment to reflect on the generations who came before.
