Maggie Daley Park is near Lake Michigan. It enhances the northeastern part of Grant Park. This park offers a delightful contrast to the city’s grid.
Before Maggie Daley Park existed, this area was just an expansive parking lot. Later, it became the Richard J. Daley Bicentennial Plaza in the mid-1970s. It had a 3700-car underground garage and recreational facilities. There were tennis courts, an ice rink, and the first playground in Grant Park.
In 2009, the city planned a renovation. They wanted to revitalize the outdoor spaces. Thousands of citizens participated in workshops to help shape the new park. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates designed the park. Their design included curvilinear forms and whimsical elements. It provides a counterpoint to the symmetry of Grant Park.
The Chicago Park District Board renamed the site Maggie Daley Park. This honored Maggie Daley. She was Chicago’s First Lady. She improved the lives of children and enriched the city’s culture. Maggie Daley co-founded Gallery 37. It was a summer arts program for teens. This program led to After School Matters. This non-profit offers teens activities in arts, sports, and technology.
Construction took two years. It cost $60 million. This included rebuilding the underground parking lot.
Maggie Daley Park officially opened on December 13 2014. It features a field house, an ice skating ribbon, and climbing walls. Landscaping and a children’s playground add to the park’s charm. A garden honors cancer survivors.
The park is bounded by Randolph Street, Monroe, Columbus, and Lake Shore Drives. You can easily access Maggie Daley Park from Millennium Park. Just cross the BP Pedestrian Bridge.
Maggie Daley Park also has the Play Garden. It offers six play areas. These include The Wave Lawn, The Harbor, and The Watering Hole. There is also The Slide Crater, The Enchanted Forest, and The Sea.
The Sea features a large metal play ship. The Enchanted Forest has archways defined by upside-down trees. The Slide Crater is entered from the Wave Lawn by the Tower Bridge.
