In 1868, a simple draper’s shop opened in Aarhus. This humble beginning blossomed into the retail giant we know today as Magasin du Nord. Right here at the Magasin du Nord Museum, we unravel the captivating story of this iconic department store. The museum, established in 2013 by the Magasin du Nord Foundation, resides within the historic Kong Hans’ Vingård, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Kongens Nytorv. Magasin du Nord’s journey from a small shop to a Danish institution is truly remarkable. The original founders, Theodor Wessel and Emil Vett, couldn’t have imagined their Aarhus venture would lead to such a legacy. The Copenhagen store opened in 1870 within the former Hotel du Nord, eventually adopting its name in 1879. The current building, a stunning example of French Renaissance Revival architecture, replaced the old hotel in 1894. The museum exhibits a fascinating collection of artifacts from Magasin du Nord’s past. From elegant dresses and vintage toy cars to scrapbooks and advertising films, these items offer a glimpse into changing consumer tastes and the store’s evolution. Did you know Magasin du Nord introduced Scandinavia’s first elevator in 1935? It was a marvel of the time. And in 1952, they unveiled Denmark’s first escalator, further solidifying their reputation for innovation. The museum also boasts a unique connection to Hans Christian Andersen. He resided in a small attic room in this very building from 1827 to 1828. While the original room is gone, a meticulously reconstructed version exists on the third floor of the main department store. You can even visit it! The Magasin du Nord Museum isn’t just a collection of objects; it’s a portal to Denmark’s retail history. It is a testament to the enduring power of entrepreneurship, innovation, and a touch of elegance.
