Founded in 1935 Magain David stands as San Francisco’s first Sephardic synagogue. This wasn’t just another place of worship. It was a beacon a haven for a diverse community of Sephardic Jews. Imagine fifty families uniting their traditions under one roof. They chose the name Magain David arguing over the best spelling to reflect Sephardic pronunciation. This wasn’t just a name it was a testament to their heritage.
The congregation initially began as Beth El Sephardim Congregation. A month later it officially became Magain David Sephardim Congregation. It merged with a smaller group The Spanish Congregation further solidifying its place as a uniting force. The founding board comprised influential figures like Albert Ades Ezekiel Battat and many others. These individuals laid the foundation for a vibrant community.
Magain David opened its doors at 351 Fourth Avenue. The dedication ceremony was a momentous occasion. Notables including representatives of the Mayor and Board of Supervisors attended. Rabbis and presidents from other synagogues were also present. Besides daily and Shabbat services the synagogue started a Sunday school Ahabat Shalom later renamed Sephardic Hebrew School. Rev JK Isaacs ran the school.
In 1935 Magain David received a Sefer Torah a sacred scroll from Shanghai. This act solidified the global connections of the congregation. A few years later in 1936 Magain David actively participated in anti-fascist movements. Roger Bramy the synagogue’s president wrote an article about the perilous situation of European Jews. The synagogue hosted anti-Nazi meetings throughout the decade.
Through the 1940s several rabbis led the congregation including Rabbi Ezekiel Sion Jacob. A chapter of Bnai Brith Youth Organization joined the synagogue in 1951. Magain David even offered support to Congregation Bnei Emunah a group of war refugees from Europe. They used the synagogue’s facilities and received a Torah scroll. The congregation faced its challenges. Rabbi Jacob who served for decades retired in 1966 making aliyah to Israel.
In the late 1970s new leadership revitalized the synagogue. Rabbi Hayyim Kassorla led the congregation unifying various Sephardic practices. Rabbi Eliahu Shalom Ezran took over in 1990 expanding social hall and kitchen facilities. The synagogue reopened a school with a peak enrollment of 30 children. In 2007 a significant renovation moved the Ark to the eastern side. It was rededicated as The Azan Sanctuary.
Today Magain David thrives with over 100 families. People from throughout the Bay Area attend services. Its mission remains to serve as a home for traditional Sephardic Judaism. It continues to fulfill this mission offering its warmth and community to all. The story of Magain David isn’t just about a building it’s about resilience faith and the enduring power of community.
