Why is this affluent neighborhood called Madárdomb, or “Bird Hill”? Here in Budapest’s 17th district, Madárdomb stands as a testament to a unique chapter in the city’s history. Madárdomb is a modern, green residential area. It’s known for its large, multi-story, and semi-detached family homes. Madárdomb began its transformation in the latter half of the 1980s. Many of the original inhabitants were upper-middle class individuals. They came from other desirable parts of the district. These new residents had the financial means to build or purchase newly constructed properties. This financial stability is reflected in Madárdomb’s high educational attainment. A significant 46.7% of the population holds a university degree. This percentage is more than double the district average and one of the highest in Hungary. This emphasis on education is also a legacy of the initial settlers. Many of them were university graduates themselves. Madárdomb sits on a hill, 155 meters above sea level. The name, “Bird Hill,” comes from the streets named after various birds. From the western parts of the homes, you can enjoy a panorama of Gellért Hill and the Buda Hills. Despite its proximity to Ferenc Liszt International Airport, Madárdomb remains surprisingly quiet. Noise level measurements confirm that it falls well below the lowest noise thresholds. Madárdomb also boasts excellent public transportation. The number 67 bus provides a direct link to Örs vezér tere and the M2 metro line in just 19-22 minutes. From there, you can easily access the city’s metro network and the city center. Nearby bus stops along Pesti út offer further connections. Night buses also serve the area, ensuring easy access from the city center even after dark. A train station at Rákoshegy, a short walk away, connects to Keleti railway station in just 14 minutes. Plans are also underway for a new train station within Madárdomb itself. This will further enhance access to the rail network and the city center. Madárdomb’s story is not just about modern development. It’s intertwined with the history of Rákoskeresztúr and the post-World War II land reforms. Although initially designated for housing and incorporated into the town, the area was later returned to agricultural use. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Madárdomb truly took flight, evolving into the affluent neighborhood we see today.
