Welcome to McKellar Park. It is more than just a green space. McKellar Park is a hub of community and sporting history. This park has a special story. It’s a story of local pride and national significance.

Once known as Belconnen Soccer Centre, McKellar Park officially opened on November 23, 2002. ACT Senator Margaret Reid cut the ribbon. The first game was a thrilling 2-2 draw. Belconnen United FC faced Bonnyrigg White Eagles.

McKellar Park quickly became a vital venue. It hosted the 2003 OFC Women’s Championship. This tournament also served as the OFC Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament. Teams from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Cook Islands competed here. Australia emerged victorious. They beat New Zealand 2-0 in front of 2,200 cheering fans.

The main grandstand at McKellar Park is named after Ken Carter. Carter contributed significantly to the Belconnen Soccer Club. The grandstand has about 600 seats. It also includes a concession area, change rooms, and press facilities.

In 2012, McKellar Park hosted the W-League Grand Final. Canberra United played against Brisbane Roar. The match was a sell-out. 2,512 fans packed the stadium. Canberra United won their first championship title 3-2. Michelle Heyman scored a crucial goal. The atmosphere was electric that day.

McKellar Park also served as a training venue for the 2015 Asian Cup. It received an upgrade to its lighting. Oman used McKellar Park for closed training sessions.

In 2017, the Australian U20 national team played a practice match here. They faced Belconnen United’s NPL first team. Ufuk Talay, the Young Socceroos’ manager, organized the match.

McKellar Park has a history of hosting pre-season friendlies. Belconnen United has faced A-League teams here. Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners have been frequent visitors.

McKellar Park holds a record attendance of 2,512. This was during the 2012 W-League Grand Final. It was a memorable day for Canberra United and its fans.
