Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s the Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği gliding silently between two points. This isn’t just any cable car. It is a vital thread in Istanbul’s urban fabric.

Opened on April 11 1993 the Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği offers more than a ride. It provides a unique connection. It links Maçka to Taşkışla. These are two vibrant locales separated by a surprisingly deep valley.

Imagine a lush green expanse. This valley is 42 meters deep. The Maçka Democracy Park and Beyoğlu Marriage Office nestle within. Normally one would have to take a long horseshoe-shaped path around the valley. But the Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği offers a swift alternative.

In merely 3.5 minutes you’re transported. It saves time and offers stunning views. The Maçka station grants access to Teşvikiye and Nişantaşı. These are upscale neighborhoods known for their elegance. The Taşkışla station places you within walking distance of Taksim Square.

The Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği consists of two stations. There are no support towers between them. The system uses two sets of two cabins. Each cabin holds six people. So it is a tandem cabin setup. The cabins move unidirectionally.

There are two ropes for each direction. One carries the cabins. The other hauls them along. The cabins pause at each terminal. They then accelerate to a speed of 4 meters per second. It is quite efficient.

What happens during a power outage? A standby generator kicks in. It ensures the cabins reach their destination. It runs at a slower speed for safety.

The Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği operates daily. Weekdays see service from 7:30 to 21:00. Sundays have shorter hours from 8:00 to 19:00. During peak times cabins depart every five minutes. Around 1000 passengers use the Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği daily.

The Maçka-Taşkışla Teleferiği was built by Baytur Inc. The system was designed by Poma a French company.
