Before us stands the Machine de Marly a testament to 17th-century ingenuity. King Louis XIV desired endless water for his extravagant gardens at Versailles. The palace’s location high on a hill far from any river presented a significant challenge. The solution? This magnificent machine.
Arnold de Ville a young ambitious engineer from Huy designed the Machine de Marly. He enlisted the expertise of the Sualem brothers renowned master carpenters and mechanics from Liege. Their combined skills resulted in a marvel of engineering. Construction lasted six years a monumental undertaking that involved 1800 workers.
The Machine de Marly was truly a gigantic system. Fourteen massive water wheels each 12 meters in diameter powered over 250 pumps. These pumps lifted water a staggering 150 meters up the hillside. The initial target was to pump 6000 cubic meters of water daily. However the machine never quite reached its intended capacity. The system’s complexity often led to breakdowns requiring constant maintenance by 60 dedicated workers.
Imagine the sounds the relentless churning of wheels the clanking of pumps. The Machine de Marly was incredibly noisy. Its constant operation day and night except during harsh weather conditions was legendary. It was said to be the most complex machine of its time.
