A grand edifice of brick and terra cotta, the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church stands proudly on Sutter Street. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the evolving spirit of San Francisco, a place where history and faith intertwine. The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always here on Sutter Street. Its roots trace back to a much humbler beginning in 1904 on the corner of South Liberty and East Valley Streets. The congregation’s first pastor, Reverend W.M. Evans, guided the fledgling church. The original members, including Deacons C.H. Ray, John A. Alston, Arthur Jones, and Dan Jackson, along with Mrs. Emma Rogers and Mrs. Fannie Foster, laid the foundation for the church’s growth. The church’s journey led them from a space above a shoe store to a slat building facing Exchange Street. Then, in 1914 under Reverend E.W. Bowen, the church expanded, turning to face West Henry Street. Growth continued, and in 1921, Reverend R.S. Sims spearheaded the construction of a new brick building, quite literally built around the existing wooden structure. The Depression era saw internal improvements, like the installation of a new furnace, a significant achievement during a time of hardship. The church continued to evolve, with each pastor leaving their mark. Reverend W.L. Wilson, who came to Macedonia in 1942, served for an impressive 46 years. He oversaw the installation of new pews and a baptistery. The church continued its transformation under Reverend Jones, with a new sound system and other technological upgrades. Reverend Oscar R. Cleveland furthered the church’s vision, overseeing renovations and the purchase of additional land. The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church also became a hub for community outreach. A Discovery Camp for children and a soup kitchen were established. Today, the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, originally built for the Knights Templar, has become a beacon of faith. This majestic building echoes with the voices of civil rights activists and the sermons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who preached here in the late fifties and early sixties. The legacy of faith, perseverance, and community service continues to resonate within these walls. The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church has not merely survived, it has thrived, becoming a cornerstone of the Western Addition.
