Isn’t it remarkable that this spot has been a sacred space for so long? We are standing before the Macang Monastery. It’s a place of peace and reflection in bustling San Francisco.

Macang Monastery has a unique history. It intertwines with the story of an old church. The story starts with Old Saint Patrick’s Church. It was originally built in 1854. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese erected the building. They shipped building materials from the East Coast.

Imagine this: The church was first located on Market Street. Later, it was moved to Eddy Street. Finally, it was relocated to its current site. This was to become Holy Cross Parish.

In the 2000s, the Macang Buddhist Monastery purchased the church. They moved it slightly again. It became part of a larger temple complex. This embodies a coming together of histories.

The Macang Monastery is more than just a building. It is a place where different traditions meet. The lineage of the Macang Monastery comes from H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. It follows an authentic Buddha-dharma lineage. Upon entering, you’ll see the Heavenly Kings Hall. The Maitreya Bodhisattva Hall and the Sakyamuni Buddha Hall connect. Behind the Maitreya Bodhisattva Hall is the dharma-protecting deity Skanda Bodhisattva. He faces the Sakyamuni Buddha Hall. Inside this hall is a large statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. Also, there are statues of Manjusri Bodhisattva and Kuan Yin Bodhisattva. Statues of sixteen arhats line both sides.

H.H, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu sect, Trinley Thaye Dorje, recognized Venerable Hsi Jao Seng Ge III Dharma King Palden Lodoe. He is the head of the Macang Monastery. He is also president of the Tibetan Buddhism Association of America.

Before its opening, Macang Monastery held an exhibition of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha Ill’s achievements. It displayed world-class treasures. The Chinese characters “Ma Cang Si” are inscribed over the temple doors. They are from the calligraphy of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. The English words were written by Her Most Eminent Highness Biquyu Jinba Rinpoche. She is a world-class artist.
