Slipping through the western reaches of Lyon, the Yzeron River whispers tales of nature’s power and human ingenuity. L’Yzeron, a tributary of the mighty Rhône, begins its journey in the Monts du Lyonnais. Its watershed, a tapestry of streams and brooks, feeds the river’s flow. This makes L’Yzeron prone to flooding, especially in its lower valley. These floods are often sudden and violent. Imagine L’Yzeron, usually calm and serene, transforming into a raging torrent. The waters surge and swell, carrying debris and overflowing its banks. These floods have been a recurring challenge for the communities along L’Yzeron. Modern engineering has attempted to tame the river’s fury. Protective measures are now in place to safeguard against floods occurring up to a thirty-year frequency. Think of the 2003 December flood as a benchmark for this protection. But nature is unpredictable. A larger, more powerful flood, exceeding current defenses, is always a possibility. A centennial flood, a one-in-a-hundred-year event, is the reference point for the Flood Risk Prevention Plan (PPRNI) approved in 2013 for L’Yzeron. The Romans, ever the pragmatic engineers, recognized L’Yzeron’s potential. They cleverly harnessed its waters to supply Lugdunum, now Lyon, via the aqueduct known today as the Aqueduc de l’Yzeron. L’Yzeron’s valley also presented a significant obstacle for two of the four ancient aqueducts, the Aqueduc du Gier and the Aqueduc de l’Yzeron. The Romans ingeniously constructed inverted siphons to overcome this challenge. So, as you stand by L’Yzeron today, remember its dual nature. It’s a source of life and beauty but also a force to be reckoned with. The river’s history, intertwined with human endeavor, continues to shape the landscape and lives of those who dwell along its banks.
