In 1913, a small chapel arose between the villages of Holme and Skåde. This humble structure, known as the Eastern Chapel, served a joint cemetery. It would eventually become Lyseng Kirke. The original building was constructed in the Romanesque style, featuring a natural stone base and a brick superstructure. Lyseng Kirke, as it stands today, is much more than just a chapel. It’s a testament to the growth and changing needs of the surrounding community. The original chapel became redundant in 1951 when Holme Church established its own cemetery. Services at the Eastern Chapel dwindled until it eventually closed its doors. The building sat unused for decades. By the 2000s, Holme and Skåde Parishes faced a challenge. They were two of the largest parishes in the Diocese of Aarhus, each boasting around 11,000 members. The diocese proposed splitting the parishes, but the councils had a different idea. They suggested creating a third church, breathing new life into the forgotten Eastern Chapel. In 2007, an agreement was reached. The Eastern Chapel would be reborn. Renovations began, expanding the original structure. The first sermon in the newly renovated Lyseng Kirke echoed through its walls in February 2010. Today, Lyseng Kirke stands as a symbol of community collaboration. It serves as a shared secondary church to both Holme and Skåde Parishes. The church continues to serve its growing community, a testament to its resilient past and vibrant future.
