Lyons Evangelical Church has a rich history. German immigrant farmers established three German Reformed Congregational churches in Burleson County. This happened in the mid-19th century. By the 1880s, these churches were Immanuel Lyons Church, St. Stephen’s Mound Prairie, and Salem Birch Church. These churches collaborated in many ways for years. They shared a pastor and combined confirmation groups.
Each church joined the Evangelical and Reformed denomination in the 1920s. This denomination was headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.
After several years of discussion and sacrifice, the three churches united in 1961. They pooled resources. They even used different parts of their previous church buildings. A new church building was constructed. It was in the agreed central location of the Immanuel Church of Lyons, Texas. The united congregation joined the United Churches of Christ denomination.
A new church building was deemed necessary in 2007. Plans were drawn and a common mind prevailed. By 2009, construction was underway. It was completed after 8 months. The previous building was donated to a rural congregation. It still stands today.
The church changed its affiliation in 2020. It moved from the United Church of Christ. It joined the Evangelical Association of Reformed Congregational Churches. This affiliation connects Lyons Evangelical Church to its historic faith. It partners with like-minded churches. As a result, the church changed its name to Lyons Evangelical Church in 2020.
