Settled amidst the vast farmlands of Illinois, Lynwood offers a unique blend of rural tranquility and suburban charm. Lynwood is a village located 25 miles south of Chicago’s Loop, nestled between State Route 394 and the Indiana state line. Lynwood’s story begins in the mid-1800s with the arrival of Dutch immigrants seeking fertile land and new opportunities. These early settlers established a strong agricultural foundation, cultivating crops like onions, beets, and soybeans.

Originally part of Bloom Township, Lynwood remained sparsely populated for many years. The 1960 census recorded a mere 255 residents. Incorporation as a village finally came on December 18, 1959, with just 66 of the 180 residents casting their votes in favor. Lynwood’s growth has been closely tied to the development of surrounding communities like Glenwood, Lansing, and South Holland. These neighboring areas also attracted farmers of Yankee, English, and Dutch descent who worked together to drain the land and improve agricultural productivity.

Lynwood’s population saw a significant jump in the 1980s. The introduction of Lake Michigan water and improved flood control measures spurred development and attracted new residents. The population surged from a modest 1,042 in 1970 to 4,195 in 1980. By the year 2000, Lynwood boasted 7,377 residents, and by 2020, it reached over 9,000, a blend of attractive neighborhoods and budding commercial ventures. Despite this growth, Lynwood has retained its distinct rural atmosphere, offering residents a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Interestingly, two of Lynwood’s roads hold historical significance. The Glenwood-Dyer Road, partly following Illinois Route 83, traces the path of an ancient trail. This trail connected the Sauk Trail near Dyer, Indiana, with the Vincennes/Hubbard’s Trail near Thornton, Illinois. Route 30, at the southern edge of Lynwood, aligns with the old transcontinental Lincoln Highway, designated in 1922. Before that, the Lincoln Highway followed the Sauk Trail until it met the Dixie Highway in South Chicago Heights. Today, Lynwood stands as a testament to its agricultural roots while embracing a future of balanced growth and a unique blend of rural and suburban living. The village provides a tranquil retreat just a short distance from the vibrant metropolis of Chicago.
