Founded on October 24 1910 Lynnhurst Congregational United Church of Christ has a rich history. It welcomed its first members in Southwest Minneapolis a then suburb without sidewalks. From its inception Lynnhurst Church prioritized community care and social justice. In 2010 celebrating its 100th anniversary the church commissioned a hymn From the Past We Hear Your Voices composed by Lynn Dixon and Henrik Strandskov. A commemorative book documenting the church’s first century also celebrated this milestone.

Lynnhurst boasts a strong musical tradition enriching its services and community events. Jay Bruns the Director of Music leads the Lynnhurst Choir a group open to all singers. The choir performs twice monthly rehearsing before the 10 o’clock service. They occasionally perform with instrumentalists and guest directors even venturing to the Lake Harriet Bandshell for summer performances.

The church also features Men of Note a men’s singing group led by Paul Olson. This group comprises mostly tenors and basses from the choir and other congregants. They sing monthly and participate in the annual talent show. A Women’s Quartet a long-standing ensemble and the Nostalgic Gospel Trio a small group playing gospel folk and Americana music add to the musical variety. Lynnhurst Brass a brass trio playing diverse genres rounds out the musical offerings. The church frequently invites guest musicians enhancing the worship experience. Cellists Lars Ortiz and Eric Graf as well as soprano saxophonist Jeff Horwich are frequent guests. Guitarists and vocalists Curt Roshau and Steve Wold also grace the church with their talents. Lynnhurst’s inclusive musical spirit encourages participation from all.

The church’s current leadership includes Interim Minister Rev Mark Kuether who has served UCC congregations since 1988. Rev John Slothower the Associate Minister has served the church since 1982. Rebecca Northup joined the church in 2024 as Director of Community Engagement and Office Management. Lynnhurst Congregational UCC continues its legacy of faith music and community engagement in Southwest Minneapolis.
