Across the centuries, Lyngby Åmose has transformed. It has shifted from an open landscape to a dense forest and back again. Lyngby Åmose whispers tales of resilience and change. This 50-hectare bog north of Lyngby Sø, stretching from Mølleå to Lyngby Omfartsvej, is a testament to nature’s enduring power. Preserved since 1949, Lyngby Åmose showcases a rich tapestry of plant and animal communities. The extensive network of paths, accessible to most, including those with mobility limitations, invites exploration. Lyngby Åmose is part of a larger preservation area, encompassing Lyngby Sø and Bagsværd Sø. It’s also integrated into the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its ecological significance. In the 19th century, Lyngby Åmose was a different world. It was an open landscape of sedges and poor fens. Over time, the bog dried, allowing trees to encroach and transform the area into the alder swamp and wooded peat bog we see today. Before the 1930s, Lyngby Åmose was divided into lots connected to farms in Virum. Thatched roofs were made from reeds harvested here. The shrubs provided fuel for heating and cooking. This constant use kept the trees in check, maintaining the open landscape. In the following decades, tree growth exploded. The entire bog was on the verge of becoming completely forested. However, Lyngby-Taarbæk Kommune intervened, nurturing the valuable poor fens. They worked to restore the open landscape by managing tree growth and encouraging the dense ground vegetation of peat mosses. The presence of roe deer also contributes to this balance. Lyngby Åmose’s history echoes the ingenuity and resourcefulness of past generations. It demonstrates the constant interplay between humans and nature. Today, as you walk through the accessible paths, you experience this unique blend of history, conservation, and natural beauty.
