Before becoming a school Lycée Teilhard de Chardin had a different purpose. In the 17th century it housed the Manufacture du ras d’or de Saint-Maur. Marcelin Charlier directed this fabric factory. Colbert summoned Charlier to Paris in 1658. By 1673 he supplied Louis XIV with luxurious fabrics. The factory relocated to Saint-Maur in 1677. Hundreds of workers crafted sumptuous velvet. It featured gold and silver embroidery. They rivaled Italian fabrics. Even the Dauphin visited the Manufacture in 1700.
Today Lycée Teilhard de Chardin educates over 1400 students. It offers general technological and higher education programs. The school excels in preparing students for the Baccalauréat.
