The American Field Service, driven by a wave of compassion and fueled by the generosity of Americans in Paris, established a hospital within those very walls. Over 200 beds, eventually increasing to 600, filled the space where desks and chairs were meant to be. Over the course of the war, the Lycée Général Louis Pasteur, in its unexpected role, provided solace to more than 12,000 wounded souls. This poignant chapter in the lycée’s history is forever etched in stone, with two commemorative plaques solemnly recounting the story of the American Field Service from 1914 to 1917. Even though it served a purpose far removed from its intended one, the Lycée Général Louis Pasteur played a crucial role during those tumultuous years. After the war’s end, it finally began its journey as an educational institution. The Lycée Général Louis Pasteur, bearing the name of a man synonymous with groundbreaking scientific discovery, finally opened its doors to students in 1919. The official inauguration, however, took place on October 18, 1923, coinciding with the centenary of Louis Pasteur’s birth, a fitting tribute to its namesake. Since then, the Lycée Général Louis Pasteur has flourished, nurturing generations of students and solidifying its place as a beacon of knowledge and resilience.
