In 1909, a seed of education was planted in Beirut. This seed, nurtured by the Mission Laïque Française, blossomed into what we now know as the Lycée Abdel Kader. Lycée Abdel Kader stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. Originally called the Collège Français, it opened its doors in a modest house in the Tabbaris district. The demand was immediate. Within months, the student body swelled, prompting a move to the bustling Rue de Damas in 1922. The Lycée Abdel Kader’s story took a significant turn in 1910. A separate section for girls was established, recognizing the importance of educating young women. This small initiative, starting with just four students, eventually evolved into the Lycée de Jeunes Filles in 1929, located on the very site where Lycée Abdel Kader stands today. Interestingly, this “girls’ school” also welcomed young boys until the 7th grade, creating a unique co-educational environment for younger students. Older boys would then transition to the boys’ school on Rue de Damas. The Lycée de Jeunes Filles boasted two distinct structures. The “Château,” a stunning building originally constructed in 1914 for the British Syrian Mission, housed the kindergarten and girls’ dormitory. A second building accommodated students from the 12th grade down to the 1st grade. Graduating students would then complete their studies at the Grand Lycée. In 1974, the school officially became co-educational throughout all grades, marking another pivotal moment in its history. The Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) posed significant challenges, yet the Lycée Abdel Kader remained operational throughout most of the conflict. In 1985, ownership transferred to the Rafic Hariri Foundation, a move pivotal to the school’s continued existence. For Hariri, the acquisition and preservation of a French educational institution within Lebanon was part of a larger vision to promote education and lead the nation towards recovery and peace. Today, the Lycée Abdel Kader, affectionately known as “Le LAK,” thrives as a testament to its rich and resilient past. It educates nearly 1900 students, from kindergarten to the 12th grade, across seven buildings. Its commitment to a dual Lebanese and French curriculum, coupled with the emphasis on multilingualism (Arabic, French, and English, with options for Spanish and Latin), reflects the school’s commitment to global citizenship. The Lycée Abdel Kader continues to uphold its founding principles, fostering academic excellence in a secular environment while promoting global awareness, civic engagement, and intercultural dialogue.
