How about diving into the story of a unique spiritual haven right here in San Francisco? I am talking about the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. This isn’t just another church, folks. It is a vibrant community with a fascinating history.
The story begins with Rev Wilbert V Holt. He was a missionary with a vision. In 1963, he was commissioned to serve the Chinese community in San Francisco. Imagine a small storefront transformed into a place of worship. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League played a vital role. They provided funds to start this mission in Chinatown. In March 1964, the first Lutheran Chinese-English service took place. It was held at 606 Jackson Street.
The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit thrived. In 1969, the growing congregation moved. Their new location was 1725 Washington Street. The Lutheran Women’s Mission League contributed again. At their 25th-anniversary convention, they donated $100000. This money helped renovate the new building. More and more immigrants came. They attended the bilingual worship services and Bible fellowships.
In 1987, an extension site opened. It was located on 46th and Noriega streets in the Sunset District. Here, they established the Help-U-Learn after-school tutorial program.
Time for a change of guard! In 1996, Pastor Holt retired. He was then named Pastor Emeritus. Rev David T Chan, a member of the congregation, stepped up. He became the new pastor after graduating from Concordia Seminary.
The neighborhood around the Washington Street church was evolving. Many members had moved to the Sunset and Richmond districts. Pastor David T Chan had a vision. He wanted to expand the mission to the Chinese community in the Sunset area. This led to a bold decision. They sold the Washington Street church. They then purchased a site at 2400 Noriega Street. The congregation dedicated its new church building on October 1, 2002.
In 2004, Rev David T Chan accepted a new calling. He became a Missionary to the Chinese in the Peninsula area. The church continued to flourish. This was thanks to the leadership of its Board of Elders, Church Council, and Director Amy Mui.
In 2006, the congregation welcomed Rev Shiu Ming Lau. He came from St Louis, MO. The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit had big plans. They launched the Together We Build campaign. Their goal was to construct a larger church on the same site. In 2009, Rev Christopher Ng joined as Associate Pastor. He focused on the English-speaking members and youth.
More space was needed. This would allow them to expand current ministries. It would also help prepare for future endeavors. The congregation embarked on the Together We Build project. They raised enough money to tear down the old building. They built a brand-new church at 2400 Noriega Street. The new building was finished in April 2012. It was dedicated on April 22, 2012.
Today, the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit stands as a testament to faith. It shows dedication and community spirit. From its humble beginnings in a Chinatown storefront to its current location, it has touched countless lives. It continues to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
