Nestled in Kentish Town, the Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church has a fascinating history. The Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church started its life in 1896. A small group of German Lutheran bakers craved a spiritual home. These six young men, in their early twenties, displayed remarkable initiative. They wrote to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, requesting a pastor. Each pledged 5 shillings a week, a significant 20% of their wages, to support him. Their plea was answered by Revd F W Schulze. He arrived in London in August 1896 and was installed at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Camden Town that September. Initially, they met at 54 Crowndale Road. The congregation quickly outgrew this space, moving to a rented factory hall on Stanhope Street. The Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church found its permanent home in 1901. They purchased the leasehold of 9 and 10 Leighton Crescent. This included two houses and a hall. The hall, formerly Lord Leighton’s Music Hall, became their chapel in 1902. Revd Schulze resided in a flat above the Sunday school on the ground floor. In 1938, the present church building was constructed on this site. The original chapel can still be seen in photographs from that time. The church’s dedication marked a name change. Immanuel Lutheran Church became the Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church. This symbolized their mission: to preach the Gospel of Martin Luther in the language of William Tyndale. The church’s name reflects their combined dedication to theological clarity and accessible communication. The congregation, originally German, now embraces a diverse international community. Members hail from various corners of the globe, creating a vibrant tapestry of faith and cultures. In 2004, a house on Leighton Crescent was gifted to the church and converted into a student house. This provided affordable accommodation for young Lutherans and strengthened their community. Today, the Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church stands as a testament to its humble beginnings. From six bakers to a diverse international community, their story reflects a commitment to faith, service, and community. The Luther-Tyndale Memorial Church continues to welcome all who seek a spiritual home in Kentish Town.
