Why did a school for delinquent youths once stand where Luther Burbank Park now flourishes? Luther Burbank Park, a jewel of Mercer Island, offers 80 acres of trails, wetlands, and wildlife. It’s hard to imagine this tranquil sanctuary was once the site of the Luther Burbank School, a parental school for troubled children. In 1887, C.C. Calkins dreamed of a residential community here. His grand plans faltered after economic hardship and personal tragedy. The land eventually became home to Major Cicero Newell’s Industrial School in 1904. Newell’s harsh methods, including chaining children, sparked controversy. The school evolved under Willis Rand, adding a farm where students cultivated orchards and raised livestock. The program aimed to rehabilitate “morally delinquent” children through education and labor. The horticultural program thrived, producing prize-winning Holstein cows. In 1931, the school was renamed Luther Burbank School, honoring the renowned botanist. By the 1950s, the school faced overcrowding and disrepair. The once-productive farm was discontinued. Debates raged about the school’s future, with some islanders opposing its presence altogether. Finally, in 1968, King County purchased the land, transforming it into Luther Burbank Park. The old buildings were burned down in 1976, making way for the open space we enjoy today. Only the 1928 brick dormitory remains, a silent witness to the park’s complex past. Today, Luther Burbank Park offers a peaceful escape. As you walk its trails, remember the echoes of the children who once toiled and learned on this very land. Their story is woven into the fabric of this beautiful park, a reminder of the power of transformation and community.
