Journey with me to Luojing, a town teeming with hidden stories. Luojing isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, industry, and daily life. Luojing sits within the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, about 29 kilometers north of the city’s heart. In 2010, this town was home to 54,329 people. Imagine the energy of a community where nearly 25,000 women and almost 30,000 men contribute to its unique character. Luojing isn’t just about numbers though. It’s about the lives lived here. Think of the children, about 7% of the population, growing up in this dynamic environment. Picture the adults, a vast 83%, navigating the daily rhythm of work and life. And consider the elders, around 8%, sharing their wisdom and experiences. Luojing was more than just a residential area. It housed the Shanghai Luojing Coal Terminal. This terminal, once a vital part of the town’s industrial activity, ceased its coal operations in 2017 and its ore operations in 2019. But Luojing is not a place stuck in the past. It’s a town in transition. The former coal and oil terminals began their transformation into a modern container terminal in late 2022. By the end of 2023, the first phase of this ambitious project was complete and undergoing testing. Luojing is a testament to adaptation and progress, a town embracing the future while honoring its past.
